Leveling pets

Hello. I have a problem with leveling hatchling/wolf. I know that pets should attack mobs to get exp. But it doesn't work. My character have 54 lvl  - hatchling 35. Fighting with hatchling against mob lvl 50 - 0 exp. Hatchling alone kill mob lvl 30 - 0 exp. Character lvl and pet lvl should be the same?

Even when u kill mobs on pet lvl, and also when pet kills mobs alone
